Detail

Are you a passionate and creative teacher who enjoys inspiring young people through practical learning and innovative design? This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving Design and Technology Department where creativity, problem solving and high aspirations sit at the heart of the curriculum.

As a Teacher of Design and Technology, you will play a key role in encouraging pupils to explore ideas, develop technical skills and produce thoughtful, well crafted outcomes. You will work within a supportive department that values collaboration, professional development and excellence in teaching.

Our vision in the Surbiton High School Design and Technology Department is to encourage every pupil to have an outlet to demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving ability, and to design and make products and systems which make peoples’ lives better. We empower our pupils to be curious about the world; to learn the transferable practical skills and learning habits in order to respond to the fast-changing nature of technological advances, and to prepare them for the 21st century working environment. We have fully-equipped and brand new teaching spaces in resistant materials, graphics and textiles, where pupils can use traditional techniques with computer-aided design and manufacturing equipment. The teaching staff are supported by a full-time technician.

In Years 7 and 8, all teaching staff deliver lessons in the three major areas product design, textiles and graphics. From Year 9, pupils are taught by specialist teaching staff in preparation for GCSE study, with current projects focusing on jewellery design, architecture and textiles garment manufacture. At GCSE level, we teach the AQA Design and Technology course, with the pupils split into the three material areas of woods, papers and boards and textiles. At A level, our students have the option of studying Design and Technology Product Design or Design and Technology Fashion and Textiles. Design and Technology is a popular choice with our pupils and the increasing numbers at GCSE and A level are evidence of this.
