The Board of Governors are seeking an inspiring individual who can quickly win the confidence and trust of all members of the College community.

St Joseph’s College is a leading Catholic independent day school for around 600 boys and girls aged 3 to 18 in Reading, Berkshire. It is fully co-educational and consists of the Senior School (ages 11 to 18) and the Prep School (ages 3 to 11). Its ethos and tradition are firmly rooted in the Catholic faith, creating an atmosphere where Christian values are recognised and established. This is reflected in the school motto, ‘Optima Deo’, meaning ‘My best for God’.

The College’s local and national reputation has grown in recent years as witnessed by it being crowned the TES Independent School of the Year for 2015/16. More recently, the College was shortlisted for the TES Wellbeing of the Year Award; recognised as one of the top 25 influencers and innovators in the Independent Sector at the i25 awards; featured in the 2019 Parliamentary Review and was a finalist again at the Independent School of the Year Award.

The Senior School and Prep School are located within a single campus sustaining a ‘one school’ ethos. The Prep and Senior Schools share the same aims and values which place an emphasis on providing a holistic education: academic, pastoral, social and spiritual, and where pupils develop the attributes of commitment, collaboration, confidence and communication through the various aspects of school life.

St Joseph’s welcomes pupils of every faith or no faith and the School is renowned for its strong identity as kind and caring, but also as a school ambitious for its pupils where each child is known, supported and encouraged. In a recent survey, 98% of parents described their child’s experience of St Joseph’s as either ‘happy’ or ‘very happy’.

Class sizes are small and designed to ensure every pupil receives individual guidance and support to achieve their potential, the success of which is demonstrated by the College’s ranking in the top fifty for value added in the national league tables. Pastoral care is central to all aspects of school life; there is a comprehensive pastoral structure, including a new Chaplaincy and Wellbeing Centre, designed to ensure that all pupils are safe and valued. The wide-ranging co-curricular programme includes many sports, outdoor pursuits, clubs, and cultural visits. Music and Drama are specific strengths.

As a charity, St Joseph’s College is governed by a Board of Governors, a committee of the College’s trustees. Substantial investment has been made in College facilities over the last few years, with the completion of a new Music Centre and an all-weather pitch, and there are further ambitious plans within the current five-year development plan.

The Governors of St Joseph’s College are inviting applications from candidates to succeed Andy Colpus, under whose energetic and creative leadership the College has been committed to providing a high quality, affordable independent education, has completed the transition to co-education and has nearly doubled its pupil numbers. The exciting challenge for his successor is to sustain and build on this legacy and to lead the College through its next stages of development.

The Board of Governors are now seeking an inspiring individual who can quickly win the confidence and trust of all members of the College community. Already in a senior leadership position and a practising Catholic, you will have an excellent track record in education which demonstrates your commitment to and alignment with St Joseph’s Catholic foundation and its aims, beliefs, and values. You will be keen to promote academic rigour within a safe, open and transparent culture supported by excellent pastoral care and to ensure that pupils have access to a wide range of co-curricular opportunities to enhance the breadth of their education and to promote their life skills. A confident networker, you will be able to market the College effectively in Reading’s highly competitive marketplace to recruit, retain and sustain optimum pupil numbers. Your strong commercial instincts and acumen will further develop the ‘business’ side of the College and your ability as an agile and instinctive strategic thinker will provide an ambitious and deliverable vision for the future development of St Joseph’s College.
